January has been quite a busy month for Zzyzx Quartet! We performed for a packed audience at the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA on January 16th and I also performed with the Interservice Saxophone Ensemble featuring members of the premiere military bands. Zzyzx gave the world premiere of the Barlow Endowment Prize Composition by Ben Hjertmann in addition to performances of works by J.S. Bach and Jean Francaix. We will also be performing Ben Hjertmann’s new saxophone quartet “Awake, Alive, Amok, Ajar” at the NASA Biennial Conference in March. Last week, we were in residence at Baylor University in Waco, TX. We coached saxophone quartets, presented masterclasses and gave a performance as part of the Lyceum Concert Series. The program included works by David Maslanka, Ben Hjertmann, Jean Francaix, J.S. Bach, Marc Andre Hamelin and a world premiere by David Canfield.

I am very excited to announce that I will be joining the faculty at Montclair State University’s John J. Cali School of Music this fall. MSU has a fantastic music program program that is growing each year and I am excited to be given the opportunity to teach a studio of aspiring saxophonists!

We gave our NYC debut concert at Symphony Space on July 12th! Here is a video of “Strange Humors” by John Mackey from the performance:
And a review from our performance:
Dubbed “a superb ensemble with impeccable musical taste” by the Saxophone Journal, the Zzyzx Quartet will present its debut New York City recital alongside the release of its newest album, Intersections. Formed in 2007, Zzyzx has quickly gained high regard as a breakthrough chamber ensemble due to the group’s unique sound and thoughtful approach to repertoire and programming as well as the success of their first album released in 2010, Zzyzx Road. Zzyzx has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and across the continental US. Recent performances include a well-received recital at the World Saxophone Congress XVII in St. Andrews, Scotland, as well as a guest artist appearance at the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Tempe, AZ where the quartet performed a concerto in the opening gala concert.
Their repertoire features a variety of music – original works for saxophone quartet, new compositions including pieces by John Mackey and Jonathon Sokol recently commissioned by the quartet, as well as transcriptions of music which have never been performed by saxophone quartet previously. These seemingly disparate strands of music coalesce into an “intersection” of musical styles which hallmark the group’s artistry: that the intimacy of chamber music in any form or style should speak directly to the audience.
The program included works by John Mackey, David Maslanka, Thierry Escaich, Fuminori Tanada, Jean Sibelius, and a world premiere performance of Jonn Sokol’s “Gradient Contour”
Hi Everyone! Welcome to my new website! First and foremost – thanks SO much to a couple of my friends for helping me out with this project. My friend Josh Phillips, who just happens to be an amazing horn player in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and former colleague at West Point, did a fantastic job designing the entire site. I am so excited with the way it turned out – it is exactly what I was hoping for! Also, my friend Mikki Skinner, who just happens to be an amazing trumpet player here at West Point and photographer, took most of the new photos so the website would have a more updated look.
If you have a chance, check out her photography website: www.mikkiskinnerphotography.com I hope you will visit frequently for updates on performances, projects, recordings and news. Again, thanks so much for stopping by!
